Stinziano Receives Humanitarian Award from Columbus Coalition for the Homeless

State Representative Michael Stinziano received the Marsha Donner Humanitarian Award from the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless in recognition of Stinziano's work "for prioritizing the needs of homeless persons in dedication towards improving the community's quality of life" at the organization's annual meeting on Wednesday.

"I thank the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless for giving me this award," said Stinziano, a Columbus Democrat. "We can and must do more to end the scourge of homelessness in our community."

Stinziano said that since securing funding for homeless teens in the state budget last session, he's been looking at successful models for combating homelessness in other states and cities. Stinziano said more should be done to explore programs to foster and promote affordable housing for the homeless, especially for homeless families.

In 2013, the Coalition honored the Dominican Sisters of Peace with the Humanitarian Award.

The 32 member organizations that make up the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless advocate for social justice by identifying gaps within existing social service systems and bringing them to the attention of service providers and local officials.

The Marsha Donner Humanitarian Award honors the memory of Marsha Donner, who started the Coalition's annual Mother's Day Brunch for Homeless Mothers in 1997. Ms. Donner, a tireless advocate for women's empowerment issues, passed away in 2000 of cancer.
