COLUMBUS, Ohio – State Representative Michael Stinziano, a Columbus Democrat, has introduced a resolution today that would designate the “Bahama Mama, “the signature sausage of Schmidt’s restaurant, as Ohio’s official sausage.
“This would be a fitting tribute to a local business that has been part of the Ohio State Fair for a century and their unique product,” said state Rep. Michael Stinziano, the sponsor of the resolution. “There is only one ‘Bahama Mama.’”
Schmidt’s, a German Village fixture, has been an integral part of Central Ohio since 1886 when Schmidt’s first opened as a packing house. The Schmidt’s family and brand will be marking its centennial anniversary this summer at the Ohio State Fair.
The restaurant has been a proud sponsor of the Sale of Champions at the Ohio State Fair for years. The All-Ohio State Fair Band has visited the Schmidt’s Sausage Haus on the fairgrounds to play a birthday tribute to George Schmidt for nearly 80 years and continues that tradition today for John Schmidt.
Schmidt’s sausage can also be found at many outdoor functions all over Ohio including the Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton Oktoberfest’s and the Columbus Arts Festival. Schmidt’s Bahama Mama Sausage is sold nationwide and in local Ohio grocery stores including Kroger, Giant Eagle and Meijer. Schmidt’s is shipped nationwide, and has been featured nationally on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food.
