COLUMBUS–State Rep. Michael Stinziano (D-Columbus) released the following statement regarding the passage of his legislation, HB 143:
“If a coach or parent is not properly educated on the symptoms of a concussion and other brain injuries, it is likely the injury will go untreated. HB 143 is part of a ground swell of support all across the country to address athlete safety with a focus on education and preventative practices.
Simple medical guidelines or rules like those that protect junior and high school athletes in Ohio are not enough. H.B 143 will raise awareness and mandate change by creating uniform application of these standards. Guidelines are a second best alternative but they risk sporadic or inconsistent enforcement in different regions in a state.
I applaud today’s passage of HB 143 and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to ensure that every young athlete is protected from the long term damage caused by concussions and other head injuries.”
