Council Promotes Civic Participation Leading Up to Election Day

Councilmember Michael Stinziano Joined Bipartisan Group of Elected Officials and Business Leaders in Poll Worker Recruitment Program Launch

[COLUMBUS, OH] Columbus City Councilmember Michael Stinziano today joined Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted and statewide business leaders at Nationwide Insurance Headquarters for the official launch of the Day for Democracy program.

The program engages businesses, nonprofits and other organizations to help to recruit poll workers ahead of the 2016 Presidential General Election in November.

"Poll workers serve as ambassadors of our democratic process,” said Councilmember Stinziano. “It is essential we employ capable, energized and qualified candidates to work the polls.”

The statewide program partners with private companies by distributing information to their members and employees on how they can dedicate a “day for democracy” by choosing to become a poll worker on Election Day. The event launch featured executives from founding Day for Democracy partners, Nationwide and American Electric Power (AEP).

“Having served as a poll worker on numerous elections, I applaud the Secretary's recruitment efforts,” said Stinziano. “This is a great opportunity for businesses and non-profits to engage in an important public service experience.

"I encourage all citizens to serve as a poll worker. This is a fantastic way to be part of the democratic process and serve our community," he continued.
Ohio is nationally recognized as a key battleground state. Polling locations need to be appropriately staffed to ensure a seamless Election Day.

Organizations that partner with the Day for Democracy program will allow their employees or members to witness democracy in action.
