COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio have endorsed state Rep. Michael Stinziano in his bid for the Columbus City Council.
"I thank the Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio for supporting my campaign for Council. At the Statehouse, I have worked hard to advance equal rights for all," said Stinziano, who is seeking a four-year term on City Council.
"Issues of equality are issues that impact everyone in our community and I will continue to champion legislation promoting equal rights for all in Columbus." Stinziano said.
Stinziano, a Columbus Democrat, has sponsored legislation in the General Assembly which would have expanded many of the existing prohibitions in Ohio Civil Rights law against unlawful discriminately practices to apply to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Stinziano, the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Committee, has also been a leader at the Statehouse in fighting intimidation and school bullying.
According to its Web site, Stonewall Columbus serves the Central Ohio LGBT community by providing a community center and offering programming and services that enhance the well-being and visibility of our diverse community through discovery, affirmation and celebration.
Stinziano is running in the May 5 primary election; the general election is in November.
The Stonewall Democrats also endorsed sitting Councilmembers Jaiza Page; Zach Klein; Michelle Mills, Council President Pro Tem; and Shannon Hardin for Council and Council President Andrew Ginther for Mayor.
Mayor Michael Coleman is not seeking re-election.
